Jos is chairwoman and treasurer of the foundation. She likes to use her organizational skills to make sit-kitesurfing possible for people with a physical disability. She sees how much energy her brother Willem gets from sit-kiting. Through her contribution to the foundation, she wants to lower the threshold for other people to also be able to start sit-kitesurfing.
Tijn currently studies Human Movement Technologies at The Hague University of Applied Sciences and works as product development intern for the Willem Hooft Foundation. Tijn loves to design and build his own surfboards. He has been kitesurfing for more than 6 years and can often be found on the water as an VDWS kitesurf instructor.
For the Willem Hooft Foundation he is researching possibilities to improve the current sit-kitesurf board, especially in the field of safety and affordability. We hope to be able to test the first prototype this spring.
“I can no longer walk, but I will learn how to fly.”
This is what Willem Hooft said after he ended up in a wheelchair due to a motorbike accident in 2017. His big dream was to kitesurf the waves of South Africa and during his rehabilitation he began his search for ways to make his dream come true. He had a customized surfboard with a seat on it built, and after months of hard training, the time had finally come. At the beginning of 2019, Willem flew to Cape Town and made his dream come true. “This adventure has surpassed even my wildest dreams.”
Nowadays Willem’s mission is promoting the sport of sit-kitesurfing, and with the help of the Willem Hooft Foundation he is making the sport more accessible than ever to people with disabilities. As a team rider of Slingshot and Wind Voyager, he travels all over the world and uses this as an opportunity to promote the possibilities of sit-kiting worldwide. He also makes inspiring videos in which he pushes the boundaries of the sport.
Willem gives motivational talks worldwide about personal leadership, dealing with setbacks, and living life to its fullest potential. His passion inspires others to never stop dreaming.
